8 Division Garrison Defeats Brigades to Win Army Competition

The 8 Division Garrison has emerged winner of the 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition organised by the Nigerian Army, scoring 590 points to defeat other formations at the end of the four-day exercise.

1 Brigade placed second with 490 points, while 58 Signal Brigade came third with 460 points in the competition held from April 13 to 16, 2026, at the Giginya Military Cantonment.

In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the exercise brought together formations across the Division’s Area of Responsibility, including 17 Brigade, 48 Engineer Brigade and 8 Division Garrison, to test the capacity of junior personnel.

The competition featured a range of militaryactivities such as drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms and obstacle crossing aimed at assessing physical fitness, tactical ability and combat preparedness.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Northwest) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said training remains a core part of military service and urged personnel to remain committed to continuous preparation.

He commended the participants for their efforts and encouraged units to improve their performance in future exercises.

The event ended with obstacle demonstrations, presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding formations and personnel, as well as group photographs attended by representatives of security and paramilitary agencies.
