The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and with support from the European Union, has reviewed Nigeria’s National Border Management Strategy ahead of the 2027–2031 policy cycle.

The three-day Top Management Workshop, held from September 27 to 30, 2026, at Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State, reviewed the implementation of the 2019–2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan, while identifying priorities for the next policy cycle.

According to a statement signed by the NIS Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the workshop provided a platform for NIS top management and its partners to assess progress, exchange perspectives and develop strategic priorities for strengthening Nigeria’s border management framework.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, said the next strategy must be anchored on credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained inter-agency collaboration. Nandap said the review should produce a clear and actionable framework capable of responding to emerging border management and security challenges, while positioning Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.

The workshop featured strategic discussions, technical sessions, group presentations and consolidation of review outcomes. It was followed by an NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session, where participants reviewed and endorsed key recommendations, prioritised interventions, considered financing options and validated the proposed strategic direction for the 2027–2031 policy cycle.

The Service said the engagement reaffirmed the commitment of the NIS and its partners to sustained collaboration and continuous improvement in Nigeria’s border management system.
