Army Escalates Operations Against Terrorists in North West

As part of defense-wide strategy to strengthen defence in depth and operational efficiency, the Nigerian Army (NA) has sustained its heightened state of preparedness against terrorist threats in the North West, with “Operation Fasan Yamma” intensifying its offensive against the Lakurawa terrorist group.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector “Operation Fasan Yamma,” Major General Ibikunle Ajose, highlighted both kinetic (military) and non-kinetic (diplomatic and community-based) strategies as key to the operation’s success.

While hosting defence correspondents from Defence Headquarters, Abuja, at the Sokoto theatre command, Major General Ajose, provided insights into the collaborative efforts involving the Nigerian Air Force, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and other security agencies in the region.

During a Q&A session, he revealed that there has only been one recorded drone attack, which was successfully neutralized. He also noted that constructive engagement with Fulani and Hausa communities has resulted in the unconditional release of kidnapped victims and has encouraged some terrorists and bandits to voluntarily surrender their arms.

Major General Ajose emphasized that the military continues to restrict the cross-border movement of the Lakurawa group through strong collaboration with local communities in border areas.

Addressing allegations of military personnel aiding terrorists, the GOC stated that any soldier found guilty of such acts would face strict disciplinary action and death penalty is being considered. He also called on journalists to verify information before publication, warning that misinformation and disinformation can demoralize soldiers who risk their lives to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.
