Security operatives have foiled a kidnap attempt at the Army Post Service Housing Estate, Kurudu, in the Abuja after suspected armed men invaded the area in the early hours of Thursday.
The attackers, said to be about seven in number, reportedly entered a compound within the estate in an attempt to abduct a resident. Neighbours were said to have raised an alarm, prompting a swift response from soldiers deployed to the estate.
A combined team of troops and officers from the Divisional Police Post Kurudu engaged the suspects in a gun battle and successfully foiled the kidnap and robbery attempt in Phase 5 of the estate.
During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was killed, while another reportedlyescaped with gunshot wounds. Other members of the gang fled through the rear exit of the estate.
Sources said the suspected gunmen were believed to have targeted a prominent businessman residing in the estate, although authorities have yet to officially confirm the claim.
Security agencies have commenced investigation into the incident and efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
