A devastating incident occurred at the military checkpoint in Ugba Junction, Amaafu, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, claiming the lives of over 20 people. The tragedy unfolded when a commercial driver was stopped by military personnel and allegedly asked to pay 200 Naira, but offered 100 Naira, leading to an argument.
The situation escalated, with the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Katsina-Ala Branch allegedly stabbed in the hand while trying to mediate. In response, the union directed its members to block the road, causing a traffic gridlock. A heavy-duty truck then lost control and rammed into three vehicles, killing over 20 people instantly.
The Katsina-Ala Local Government Council confirmed the incident, condemning the violent conduct and ordering urgent probe.
In a statement signed by the information officer of the Local Government, Shaagee Samuel Iorlumun on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Shaku Justine, the Council expressed deep regret over the incident, condemning the misconducts that led to the deaths.

The Chairman further directed an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the root causes of the tragedy, the arrest and prosecution of anyone found culpable snd the immediate suspension of the Katsina-Ala branch leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. He also called on the NURTW Benue State Council to constitute a Caretaker Committee to oversee the Katsina-Ala branch and restore order.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for justice and accountability. The government has urged residents to remain calm, assuring that security agencies are working to prevent a recurrence.
The community mourns the loss of lives, praying for eternal rest for the departed and strength for the bereaved families.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence in Benue State, with recent attacks by gunmen claiming dozens of lives. The government has vowed to address the insecurity and bring perpetrators to justice.
