COAS Charges New Soldiers to Defeat Terrorists, Uphold Professionalism

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has urged newly recruited soldiers of the Nigerian Army to confront terrorists and other criminal elements decisively while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief gave the charge on Saturday during the Passing Out Parade of the 90 Regular Recruit Intake at the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, Kaduna State.

Shaibu said the recruits had undergone rigorous military training, including counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, and were now adequately prepared to contribute to ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

He stressed that all military operations must be conducted in strict compliance with the Rules of Engagement and the Law of Armed Conflict, despite the Army’s determination to deny terrorists and criminal groups safe havens.

The COAS also highlighted the support of President Bola Tinubu in strengthening the capacity of the Armed Forces, noting that Nigerians expect the new soldiers to demonstrate discipline, operational excellence and loyalty to the Constitution.

He warned against the misuse of social media, saying unauthorised disclosure of information and unprofessional online conduct could compromise operational security and undermine efforts to combat insecurity.

Shaibu reassured Nigerians of the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that the newly inducted soldiers would play a key role in sustaining military operations aimed at restoring peace, stability and security nationwide.

The passing out parade marked the completion of basic military training for the recruits and their formal induction into the Nigerian Army.
