The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced a three-day capacity-building programme on Rules of Origin to strengthen Nigeria’s implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

According to a statement signed by the Service, the training, which runs from 31 March to 2 April 2026, is aimed at equipping stakeholders with the technical knowledge required to enhance Nigeria’s participation in intra-African trade.

Declaring the programme open, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, represented by the Assistant Comptroller General in charge of Strategic Research and Policy, Nafiu Isiaku, described the initiative as critical to improving trade facilitation and enforcement.

He said Rules of Origin remain a key pillar of economic integration, stressing that their proper interpretation and implementation are essential for trade preference, transparency and competitiveness.

Adeniyi added that the workshop is designed to deliver both technical knowledge and practical skills, including planning, execution and evaluation, to ensure effective nationwide implementation.

Earlier, the National Coordinator of AfCFTA, Olusegun Olutayo, described the training as a significant step in Nigeria’s shift from policy formulation to full implementation of the agreement.

He emphasised that AfCFTA must translate into tangible benefits such as job creation, increased income and economic opportunities for Nigerians, urging stakeholders to deepen awareness and build practical understanding of the Rules of Origin.Olutayo also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to economic growth, while acknowledging the support of development partners, including the World Customs Organisation and the European Union.

Participants were urged to take full advantage of the programme and apply the knowledge gained to ensure Nigerian businesses are not disadvantaged due to lack of awareness.

The training is expected to improve Nigeria’s readiness to maximise AfCFTA benefits and enhance its competitiveness in continental trade.
