Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has said national unity remains central to addressing the country’s evolving security threats, praising the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and cohesion. He made the remarks on Saturday during the 2025 Army Headquarters Departments and Commands West African Social Activities (WASA), held at Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja.
In a statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director Army Public Relations, the Minister — represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Major General Henry Wesley (Rtd) — described the Army as a true reflection of Nigeria’s multicultural identity. He said its ability to harmonise ethnic and religious diversity serves as a powerful model for national stability.

General Musa noted that the Army’s sustained commitment to discipline, professionalism and shared purpose continues to reinforce national integration, adding that diversity, when effectively managed, strengthens rather than divides. He commended troops for safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, supporting civil authorities and protecting citizens across all regions.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who hosted the event, said WASA represents more than an annual cultural celebration. He described it as an intentional morale-boosting platform anchored on the administration pillar of his Command Philosophy. Strengthening esprit de corps and a shared identity among personnel, he said, directly enhances operational effectiveness.

Lieutenant General Shaibu highlighted ongoing welfare programmes, institutional reforms andstrengthened support systems aimed at entrenching the “Soldier First” culture, ensuring troops remain motivated, resilient and combat-ready, with their families adequately supported. A united and well-motivated force, he said, is better positioned to counter terrorism, insurgency, banditry and emerging threats.

On broader security issues, the COAS reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to working closely with sister services and security agencies to consolidate operational gains and restore lasting peace nationwide. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Defence Minister and the Chief of Defence Staff for their strategic guidance and consistent support.

Earlier, the Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, described WASA as a vital platform for strengthening bonds among officers, soldiers andtheir families. He said celebrating Nigeria’s cultural diversity through traditional displays and performances fosters mutual respect, shared identity and national cohesion — values essential to confronting security challenges.
He added that the Army Headquarters Departments and Commands recorded significant operational, administrative and logistics achievements in 2025, supported by sustained training activities aligned with the COAS’ directives. As the Army advances into 2026, he assured the COAS of personnel’s renewed dedication, discipline and responsiveness in service to the nation.

The event featured cultural performances, the beating of the retreat and the ceremonial lighting of a bonfire, symbolising unity, continuity and collective resolve in the defence of Nigeria.
