The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has decried the abduction of 25 students in Kebbi and Niger states, describing the incident as a cruel attack on innocent schoolchildren. It assured Nigerians that troops are already intensifying operations to rescue the victims and track down those behind the assaults.
According to the statement signed by Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, the military is investigating the claim by the Kebbi State governor that terrorists struck shortly after troops were withdrawn from the school. The DHQ said a full review is underway to establish the facts surrounding troop deployment at the time of the attack.
The statement emphasised that military operations are driven by intelligence and the overall security plan for the region. It added that any identified gaps will be promptly addressed to strengthen security and prevent a repeat of such incidents.
While acknowledging public concern over rising insecurity, the DHQ reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to restoring calm across affected communities. It also assured that the rescue of the abducted girls remains a top priority, with troops actively following all credible leads to ensure their safe return.
