DHQ Confirms Death of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in Captivity

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by his captors.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria expressed condolences to the family of the late senior officer, his colleagues and Nigerians over the loss.

The military described the late Abubakar as a distinguished officer who served the country in various capacities, including as Director of Defence Information and spokesman of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

According to the statement, the late general made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, military professionalism and national security during his years of service.

The Defence Headquarters disclosed that it had refrained from making public comments on his abduction while efforts to secure his release were ongoing.

It stated that the Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, deployed resources toward securing his safe return before news of his death emerged.

The military said the incident has further strengthened its resolve to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.

It added that ongoing operations have been intensified to apprehend those responsible for the abduction and dismantle criminal and terrorist networks operating nationwide.

The Defence Headquarters reassured Nigerians that the Armed Forces would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities and sustain efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across the country.
