Dozens of people are feared to have been killed after an air strike struck a busy market in Jilli, a weekly trading hub on the border between Borno and Yobe states in north-east Nigeria. The incident happened on 11 April during ongoing military operations targeting Islamist militants in the area. Initial reports put the death toll at about 50, but local sources say the number could be significantly higher as search and rescue efforts continue.

According to a statement signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the service has launched an investigation into reports of civilian casualties. He said the Chief of the Air Staff had ordered the immediate deployment of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to carry out a fact-finding mission, stressing that the protection of civilians remains central to NAF operations.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of devastation, with multiple explosions hitting the market at peak trading hours. Survivors were taken to medical facilities in nearby Geidam, while more seriously injured victims were referred to the state capital, Damaturu, for treatment.

The Yobe State Government said its State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had activated an emergency response, providing assistance to victims and coordinating medical support. Officials urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified casualty figures while assessments continue.

The air force has confirmed carrying out strikes in the Jilli area targeting Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, but has not officially confirmed civilian casualties. The incident has drawn criticism from some political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who called for greater accountability and safeguards to protect civilians.

Jilli Market serves as a key commercial centre for communities in both Borno and Yobe states, and the incident is likely to intensify concerns about civilian safety in Nigeria’s ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
