The Federal Government has strengthened Nigeria’s passport authentication system by integrating the country’s passport signing certificates into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD), a move expected to enhance the global verification of Nigerian passports and ease border clearance for travellers.
In a statement released by the Service Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the integration ceremony was held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, led the exercise, which was undertaken to address passive authentication challenges experienced by some Nigerian passport holders at selected foreign border control points.
According to the NIS, the successful import of all Nigeria’s Country Signing Certificate Authorities (CSCAs) into the ICAO Public Key Directory establishes a trusted chain of authentication, enabling Nigerian passports to be verified seamlessly by border control systems in all ICAO PKD member states.
The Service described the development as a significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen secure digital identity management and enhance international border security cooperation.
It added that the achievement aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reaffirms the Nigeria Immigration Service’s commitment to improving the integrity of Nigeria’s travel documents, promoting global interoperability, and ensuring smoother border clearance for holders of Nigerian passports.
