Army aviation expansion vital to Nigeria’s security strategy, says army chief

The Chief of Army Staff says the expansion of the Nigerian Army’s aviation wing is a key part of efforts to counter the country’s evolving security threats.

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu spoke in Abuja on Thursday during a visit by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, to Army Headquarters. He said sustained policy support and predictable funding were essential to fully harness the operational impact of air power.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, General Shaibu said maintaining operational superiority in a complex threat environment depends on the integration of advanced aviation platforms, unmanned aerial systems and efficient administrative support. He added that the ongoing expansion of Army Aviation is improving response times, precision and situational awareness across multiple theatres of operation, strengthening the Army’s ability to protect civilians.

The Chief of Army Staff also said the success of the modernisation drive would rely on sustainable funding, efficient procurement and strong logistics to ensure continuity and long-term effectiveness.

He further highlighted growing pressure on military infrastructure following an increase in personnel approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for greater investment in barracks and facilities to improve welfare and morale.

Mr Pheelangwa described the visit as a strategic engagement to deepen cooperation between the defence ministry and the army. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to removing administrative bottlenecks and supporting the Army’s aviation expansion and wider modernisation agenda.
