The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and journalists to enhance public trust and improve communication on security issues.
He made the call on Saturday while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory Council during their congress in Abuja.
In his address, Mr Disu commended journalists in the FCT for their role in informing the public and contributing to national development. He said the media plays a critical role in society and should be treated with respect.
The police chief added that journalists should be regarded as professionals rather than beggars, noting that his relationship with the media has always been built on mutual respect and professionalism.
He also urged both police officers and journalists to conduct themselves responsibly at all times, saying good conduct leaves lasting impressions in society.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated Mr Disu on his appointment and described him as a long-standing friend of the press.
She expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of the council’s readiness to collaborate with the police in reporting security matters objectively.
Ms Ike also said the Inspector-General would be invited as a special guest to the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration and reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to responsible journalism and support for initiatives that strengthen security and governance in the territory.
