IGP Disu Reaffirms Nigeria Police Commitment to Global Peacekeeping

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to international peacekeeping operations as it joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid tribute to peacekeepers around the world for their courage, professionalism and sacrifices in promoting global peace and security.

The IGP also honoured the memory of peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag, describing their sacrifice as a lasting inspiration in efforts to build a safer and more peaceful world.

Disu noted that Nigeria has maintained a strong presence in international peace support operations, with officers of the Nigeria Police Force serving in various United Nations, African Union and regional peacekeeping missions.

He said Nigerian police officers have consistently demonstrated professionalism, expertise and dedication in conflict-affected regions, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible contributor to global peace and security.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s commemoration, “Invest in Peace,” the IGP stressed the need for sustained investment in peacebuilding, institutional development, technology, capacity building and international cooperation.

According to him, emerging security threats such as terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts and violent extremism require innovative and collaborative approaches to peace and security management.

He also called for improved training, technology and operational resources for peacekeepers to enhance their ability to respond effectively to evolving security challenges.

The police chief further acknowledged the contributions of female peacekeepers and advocated greater participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations.
