Kogi Govt Condemns Attack on Illegal Orphanage, Says 15 Pupils Rescued

The Kogi State Government has condemned the attack on an unregistered orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, saying 15 pupils have been rescued.

In a statement on Monday, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described the incident as unfortunate and avoidable, adding that security agencies are working to secure the release of the remaining victims.

The facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of School, was reportedly operating illegally in a remote area without registration with the state government or the knowledge of relevant authorities.

According to the government, the attack occurred late on April 26, 2026, when gunmen invaded the premises and abducted 23 pupils and the wife of the proprietor.

Security operatives led by the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State, with support from other agencies, responded to the incident and rescued 15 victims.

Fanwo commended the security agencies for their swift response, saying it helped reduce the impact of the attack.

He said efforts had been intensified to rescue the remaining victims and arrest those responsible.

The commissioner also warned against operating orphanages, schools and similar facilities in isolated areas without proper registration or notification to authorities, saying such actions expose children to security risks.

The government urged operators of schools and orphanages to comply with existing regulations and engage relevant agencies for security assessment and protection.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that security operations were ongoing to restore full control of the situation.
