The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mohamed Buba Marwa, on Tuesday conducted an on-the-spot assessment of an industrial-scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratory uncovered in a remote forest in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The laboratory was recently dismantled by NDLEA operatives, leading to the recovery of 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of over N480 billion.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of a suspected drug baron, three Mexican nationals and six Nigerian accomplices allegedly linked to the illicit drug production facility.

Marwa, who visited the site on June 9, described the discovery as one of the most significant breakthroughs in the agency’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and the local manufacture of illicit substances.

The NDLEA boss inspected the facility and commended officers involved in the operation for dismantling what authorities described as a major drug production network operating deep within the forest.

The agency said investigations are ongoing to unravel the full extent of the syndicate’s operations and identify other individuals connected to the drug manufacturing ring.

The seizure is considered one of the largest methamphetamine recoveries recorded by the anti-narcotics agency in recent years and highlights the growing collaboration between local and foreign criminal elements involved in the illicit drug trade.
