The Defence Headquarters has accused an online media outlet of misrepresenting remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, on counter-terrorism efforts in the north-east.
According to a statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the military said reports suggesting that General Oluyede accused residents of Borno and Yobe states of complicity in terrorism were “misleading” and a distortion of his comments.
The statement said the defence chief had instead stressed the importance of community partnership and vigilance in tackling insecurity, noting that the fight against terrorism “is not the responsibility of the military alone” but requires collective action from citizens.
It added that General Oluyede’s call for residents to “take ownership” of security efforts reflects globally accepted counter-insurgency practices, which rely on cooperation between local communities and security forces.
The military said the CDS had referred to instances where criminal elements exploited community structures, including a case where wounded fighters were found within a town after an attack, suggesting some level of local collaboration. However, it insisted this was not a general accusation but an example aimed at encouraging vigilance.
Defence Headquarters reiterated that the Armed Forces remain committed to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and have continued to record successes in operations, particularly in the north-east.
It also urged media organisations to verify information and avoid sensational reporting that could undermine public trust or create unnecessary tension, while thanking residents and journalists for their continued support in the fight against terrorism.
