The Defence Headquarters has condemned the deadly assault on Woro and surrounding communities in Kwara State, calling the attack “cowardly” and urging citizens to reject extremist ideologies threatening national stability.
The military said it was “profoundly shocked” by the killings, which occurred after suspected terrorists returned to the area weeks after villagers rejected their request to conduct a preaching and indoctrination session. According to officials, troops had been deployed for patrols and surveillance following the initial encounter, but the attackers later resurfaced and killed residents “in protest and in a bid to terrorize inhabitants.”
In a statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the Armed Forces of Nigeria praised the resilience of communities across the country that have resisted attempts by extremist groups to impose their ideology. The statement highlighted Woro’s refusal to yield to coercion despite threats, describing their stance as emblematic of the “indomitable Nigerian spirit.”
The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith, constitutional values and individual beliefs, warning that extremist groups seek to spread fear through intimidation and violence. It also called for unity across ethnic, religious and regional lines, saying the country’s cohesion remains its strongest defence against terrorism.
Military authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens and said operations would be intensified, alongside other security agencies, to track down those responsible for the attack and other acts of terror nationwide.
