NADCEL 2026: COAS Identifies Operations, Troop Welfare as Key to National Security

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has identified operational effectiveness, manpower development, personnel welfare and sound administration as the key pillars driving the Nigerian Army’s transformation into a professional and combat-ready force capable of addressing the country’s security challenges.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the COAS made the remarks during an interactive session with media executives in Port Harcourt as part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026.

Shaibu said recent operational successes were made possible through the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose provision of critical resources has strengthened the Army’s capacity to combat terrorism and other security threats. He noted that ongoing joint operations with other security agencies and international partners have led to the neutralisation of terrorist elements, disruption of criminal networks and improved stability in several conflict areas.

The Army Chief also highlighted the acquisition of modern combat equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, Armoured Personnel Carriers, surveillance drones and the expansion of the Nigerian Army Aviation, saying the investments have enhanced operational capability and rapid response.

On manpower development, Shaibu disclosed that the Army had expanded its recruitment training capacity with the establishment of two new training depots in Osun and Ebonyi states, in addition to the existing depot in Zaria, to produce more combat-ready personnel.

He said troop welfare remains a priority, citing the construction of new accommodation, improved healthcare, subsidised education through Army Command Schools and the implementation of the Group Life Assurance Scheme, which has benefited about 15,000 personnel.

The COAS also stressed the importance of prudent resource management, transparency and greater patronage of indigenous defence industries to improve logistics and strengthen the Army’s self-reliance.

He commended the media for its professionalism and urged journalists and Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces through responsible reporting, noting that national security is a collective responsibility.
