The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it is making “significant progress” in its fleet modernisation efforts as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, held strategic talks with Leonardo Aircraft Division in Milan on the M-346 fighter ground attack aircraft programme.

In a statement signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, the service described the programme as a major boost to Nigeria’s airpower, aimed at strengthening precision strike capabilities, enhancing pilot training, and reinforcing regional deterrence.

Air Marshal Aneke’s visit, which took place between 19 and 20 January 2025, formed part of broader engagements with Leonardo’s aircraft and helicopter divisions. The CAS was accompanied by Permanent Secretaries from the Ministries of Defence and Finance, senior government officials, and top NAF officers—an indication of the priority placed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on defence modernisation and industrial cooperation.

During discussions at the Leonardo Helicopter Division, the CAS highlighted what he called a “strategic opportunity” to assess advanced technological offerings and build on longstanding collaboration. He commended Leonardo for its sustained support, noting that platforms such as the AW-109 Trekker Type B helicopters continue to play a key role in counter-terrorism and internal security operations nationwide.

The Air Marshal also referenced the operational record of Leonardo platforms already in NAF service—including the G-222, ATR-42 and multiple AW-109 variants—which he said have proved reliable in combat missions, disaster response, and other national assignments. He stressed the need for timely delivery of aircraft, spares, ground equipment and structured training packages to ensure rapid deployment and sustained effectiveness.

At the Aircraft Division, talks centred on the M-346 ground attack aircraft, which Air Marshal Aneke described as a “major milestone” in NAF’s ongoing combat fleet renewal. He emphasised the importance of aligning delivery schedules with the readiness of the designated Main Operating Base in Nigeria, as well as the need for early and comprehensive training for pilots, engineers and logisticians.

He also proposed establishing a Leonardo Support Office in Nigeria to improve aircraft availability, shorten maintenance turnaround times, and enhance long-term sustainment—initiatives he said align with the government’s drive for greater self-reliance and operational efficiency.

Responding on behalf of Leonardo, Andrea Mirteto, Senior Vice President for Sales in the Helicopter Division, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria as a strategic partner and pledged timely delivery under both the AW-109 Trekker and M-346 programmes.

Air Marshal Aneke assured Nigerians that the Air Force, working with other security agencies, remains committed to fulfilling President Tinubu’s mandate to confront security challenges across the country. He added that continued investment in modern platforms, training and international partnerships is key to building a more responsive and resilient force capable of supporting national development.
