A fire outbreak at the Nigerian Correctional Service quarters in Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos, has been contained by personnel of the Nigerian Navy, preventing what officials described as a potential major disaster.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on April 22, 2026, when a fire broke out in a residential building within the quarters.

The statement said preliminary findings indicate the fire may have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion, which caused the flames to spread to a nearby building.
Naval personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship WEY, working with the Naval Ordnance Depot, were said to have swiftly deployed two fire trucks to the scene and contained the fire before it escalated further and prior to the arrival of the Lagos StateFire and Rescue Service.

Although two buildings were affected and properties destroyed, no casualties were recorded.
The Navy said the prompt response of its personnel helped avert wider damage, while reiterating its commitment to supporting civil authorities in emergency situations and safeguarding lives and property.
