The Nigerian Navy has announced the killing of 34 suspected Boko Haram fighters in two separate operations in the Lake Chad region of Borno State.
The operations, conducted by Nigerian Navy Marines at the Naval Base Lake Chad in collaboration with the Nigerian Army’s 403 Amphibious Brigade, were carried out under Operation HADIN KAI on October 28 and 30.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the first operation took place on October 28, with an initial assessment indicating that eight terrorists had been killed.
However, a subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revised the casualty figure to 28.
The Navy said a second offensive operation was conducted on October 30 against a suspected Boko Haram enclave at Dumba, following intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions that identified and monitored the terrorists’ movements.
It said preliminary assessments indicated that six terrorists were killed, while several others sustained injuries.
The Navy added that the casualty figures from the Dumba operation were still being verified as operational assessments continued.
According to the statement, the newly established Nigerian Navy Marines have strengthened joint military operations under Operation HADIN KAI, particularly in targeting terrorist hideouts and disrupting their activities around the Lake Chad area.
It said their deployment had enhanced the military’s ability to restrict the movement of insurgents, weaken their operational capabilities and deny them freedom of action.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustained offensive operations and intelligence-led engagements in support of efforts to restore peace and stability in the North-East.
