NDLEA Begins Weapons Training, Inducts AK-47 Rifles, Pistols into Operations After 36 Years

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commenced a specialised train-the-trainer course on weapon handling and inducted AK-47 rifles and pistols into its operations for the first time since the agency was established 36 years ago.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), inaugurated the training programme on Monday at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Col. Murtala Aminu, Marwa said the initiative was aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the agency in response to evolving security threats posed by armed drug trafficking networks.

Marwa said the arms procurement process, which began in 2023 through the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), had reached its final stage, with thousands of AK-47 rifles, pistols and ammunition set for deployment across NDLEA commands nationwide. He said the Office of the National Security Adviser provided the initial consignment of firearms and ammunition for the commencement of the training, while the Nigerian Air Force would support the airlift and distribution of the weapons.

The NDLEA chairman said the pioneer participants, selected from commands across the country, would serve as master trainers and conduct a mandatory one-month weapons handling course for all personnel before the firearms are deployed for operations. He directed the participants to adhere to safety procedures, professional standards, the rules of engagement and accountability in the handling of firearms.

Marwa commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the agency’s efforts to strengthen its operational capacity. He said the induction of firearms into NDLEA operations would enhance the agency’s ability to carry out its mandate of combating drug trafficking and protecting its personnel during enforcement operations.
