Niger State Marks 50th Anniversary with Call for Renewed Commitment to Development

Niger State has commemorated its 50th anniversary with a renewed call for unity, institutional strengthening and accelerated development across the state.

In a press release signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the Federal Government described the golden jubilee as not only a historical milestone but a moment to reaffirm collective commitment to a stronger, more prosperous future.

Created in 1976 alongside Imo, Benue, Ogun, Ondo and Osun states, Niger State—popularly known as The Power State—occupies a significant place in Nigeria’s national development. As the country’s largest state by landmass, it also hosts key hydroelectric infrastructure such as the Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro dams, which continue to power industries, drive agriculture and support livelihoods across the federation.

The release noted that although Niger State has navigated decades of democratic governance, its 50th anniversary provides an opportunity to shape a clearer path for inclusive growth. The administrative division into Niger East, Niger North and Niger South, it said, underscores the need for unity, responsible leadership and coherent policies capable of unlocking the state’s economic potential.

The Minister emphasised that Niger State continues to benefit from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic revitalisation, infrastructure renewal and institutional reforms designed to strengthen states across the country.

He added that the anniversary should also serve as a moment of reflection—one that demands stronger institutions, effective governance and a renewed commitment to delivering meaningful development to citizens. The statement paid tribute to the founding fathers and patriots whose vision laid the foundations for stability and democratic progress over the past five decades.

Marking its golden jubilee, the Minister said Niger State stands at a pivotal turning point. He urged residents to embrace a shared sense of responsibility and support ongoing reforms to ensure that future milestones reflect sustained progress and fulfilled potential.

He also called on Nigerlites to support the Executive Governor of the state, Umaru Mohammed Bago, in advancing development priorities and driving long-term transformation.
