The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has called for stronger international collaboration to enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
In a statement released by Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, the navy said the appeal was made during a meeting with Denmark’s ambassador to Nigeria, Jen Ole Bach Hansen, at Naval Headquarters in Abuja.
Vice Admiral Abbas said Nigeria is taking a leading role in developing a coordinated multinational approach to tackling maritime threats in the region.

He highlighted the planned Combined Maritime Task Force, expected to begin operations in mid-2026, describing it as a coalition of partner nations aimed at improving maritime awareness and strengthening joint response capabilities.
The CNS urged Denmark to support the initiative, particularly in its operationalisation and long-term sustainability.
He also invited the Danish Navy to participate in Nigeria’s International Fleet Review as part of efforts to deepen cooperation and interoperability.

In his response, Ambassador Hansen reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to expanding defence ties with Nigeria, noting progress in bilateral relations since 2024.
He acknowledged improvements in maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and expressed Denmark’s interest in further collaboration to support regional stability.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation to ensure a safer maritime environment in the region.
