Nigeria, UK Deepen Security Cooperation as Fourth Defence Partnership Dialogue Opens in Abuja

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security cooperation as the Fourth UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership (SDP4) Dialogue commenced in Abuja.

The high-level engagement brought together security officials from both countries to review progress made since the launch of the partnership in 2022 and chart a path for deeper collaboration in addressing emerging security challenges.

Speaking at the opening session, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, described the UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership as a key pillar of the broader strategic relationship between both countries, founded on mutual trust, shared interests and a common commitment to peace, security and prosperity.

The United Kingdom’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, also described the partnership as a mature and practical relationship focused on delivering measurable outcomes through cooperation in security, defence and intelligence.

Since its inauguration in London in 2022, the partnership has expanded beyond traditional security cooperation to include counter-terrorism, cyber security, intelligence sharing, maritime security, strategic communications, law enforcement collaboration and regional stability initiatives.

Officials at the dialogue noted that the increasingly complex nature of global security threats, including terrorism, cybercrime, disinformation, organised crime and illicit financial flows, requires stronger international cooperation and coordinated responses.

Ribadu stressed that both traditional and emerging threats continue to evolve, citing foreign information manipulation, artificial intelligence-enabled threats and cyber-enabled crimes as areas requiring innovative responses.

The dialogue also reviewed progress recorded since the third partnership meeting held in London in July 2025. According to officials, notable achievements include enhanced intelligence sharing, improved counter-terrorism coordination, stronger cyber resilience initiatives, aviation security improvements and increased efforts to disrupt terrorist financing networks.

Counter-terrorism cooperation was highlighted as one of the partnership’s major successes, with both countries working closely through intelligence agencies, defence institutions and law enforcement bodies to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

Participants also emphasised the importance of a whole-of-government approach that combines military operations, intelligence, law enforcement, diplomacy, cyber capabilities and financial tools in addressing modern security challenges.

The dialogue further focused on tackling illicit financial flows, strengthening cyber security capabilities and enhancing resilience against hybrid threats, including misinformation and digital manipulation.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to promoting democratic values, human rights, accountability and the rule of law as essential elements of sustainable security cooperation.

The Abuja meeting is expected to deepen collaboration in defence, maritime security, counter-terrorism, cyber security, strategic communications and regional stability, while strengthening efforts to address emerging threats across West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.
