In a renewed show of commitment to the security of Nigerians, The Nigerian Armed Forces (NAF) has stressed the importance of strong collaboration between citizens and security forces in the ongoing fight against terrorism across the country.
Colonel Abdullahi Mohammed Umar, Commanding Officer of the 248 Recce Battalion based in Illela—a border town in Sokoto State operating under Operation Fasan Yamma—credited recent military successes in weakening the Lakurawa terrorist group to aggressive patrols and coordinated air interdictions, supported by Major General Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division.
Col. Umar noted that the Nigerian military regularly conducts joint operations with their counterparts from Niger Republic. He confirmed earlier reports that some communities had initially welcomed the Lakurawa group, unaware of their true intentions. He warned that the continued culture of silence among locals enables bandit activities to thrive and obstructs effective military intervention.
However, he stated that recent sensitization efforts by the military have helped residents become more security-conscious—prompting them to report suspicious movements and protect their communities. Towns such as Illela, Gada, Rabah, and Tangaza, once under terrorist control, have now been reclaimed by the military.
Col. Umar also cautioned against the spread of misinformation by the media, urging journalists to verify facts before publication to avoid demoralizing troops on the frontlines.
As part of a media tour, defence correspondents from Defence Headquarters in Abuja visited Illela and surrounding areas in Sokoto State to gather firsthand reports. They observed a community that is gradually returning to normalcy and rebuilding.
