The Nigerian Army has operationalised the deployment of forest guards in Kebbi State as part of efforts to strengthen community security and protect vulnerable communities from banditry and other criminal activities.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, announced the move during the operationalisation ceremony for the forest guards at the Headquarters Kangiwa in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

According to a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, about 170 forest guards have been deployed and will operate under the control of the Nigerian Army.

During the ceremony, the army also donated logistics items to support the guards, including 10 motorcycles, 170 sleeping kits and essential food supplies aimed at improving mobility, welfare and operational effectiveness in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities across Kebbi State and the wider North-West region.

Major General Koughna said the support package was designed to enhance the guards’ ability to respond quickly to security threats, sustain field operations and maintain morale.

He explained that the motorcycles wouldstrengthen patrol coverage and rapid response capabilities, while the sleeping kits and food supplies would support personnel deployed in remote areas.

The army commander urged the newly inaugurated forest guards to remain disciplined and committed to their responsibilities, stressing that victory over terrorism and banditry requires teamwork, synergy and sustained dedication. He also conveyed the good wishes of the Chief of Army Staff and warned the guards not to use their weapons against law-abiding citizens.

Kebbi State’s Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Haliru Aliyu Wasabu, who represented Governor Nasir Idris at the event, commended the Nigerian Army for what he described as a timely intervention and strong collaboration with the state government.

He said the donation demonstrates the army’s commitment to restoring peace and security, adding that the state government remains ready to work closely with the military and other security agencies to curb criminality.

The deployment and support for the forest guards form part of broader efforts by the Nigerian Army and the Kebbi State Government to strengthen community-based security structures and consolidate gains against insurgency and banditry in the North-West.
