The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has announced plans to expand Nigerian Army formations across the country as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness against evolving security threats.

Speaking at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Army is intensifying transformation efforts through increased recruitment, improved infrastructure, enhanced welfare packages, upgraded healthcare services, and the establishment of new formations nationwide.

The Army Chief also reaffirmed the military’s commitment to troop welfare and operational readiness, stressing that the confidence and support of Nigerians remain critical to achieving lasting security across the country.

In an emotional highlight of the ceremony held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, the COAS presented Nigerian Army Personnel Insurance cheques to families of fallen soldiers and troops wounded in action.

He described the gesture as part of the Army’s commitment to honouring personnel who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation, while also supporting wounded troops and their families.

Lieutenant General Shaibu commended officers and soldiers for their resilience, gallantry, and professionalism in confronting insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges nationwide.

He paid tribute to fallen heroes, noting that their sacrifices remain central to preserving Nigeria’s unity and peace.

The Army Chief further emphasised his “Soldier First Concept,” which prioritises troop welfare, morale, training, and empowerment as critical elements for sustaining combat effectiveness.

He urged commanders at all levels to maintain close engagement with personnel to boost morale and strengthen operational preparedness.

Shaibu also stressed the importance of civil-military relations, describing public support as a vital force multiplier in ongoing military operations.

According to him, the Nigerian Army will continue to pursue people-oriented programmes alongside combat operations to build trust and stability within host communities.

The COAS expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustained support to the Armed Forces, which he said has enabled the acquisition of modern equipment, refurbishment of military platforms, and improved operational capabilities.

Earlier, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi, said the conference would review operational gains recorded so far and develop strategies for the remainder of the year.

The conference is expected to feature high-level deliberations focused on strengthening the Nigerian Army’s capacity to tackle emerging security threats while sustaining support for personnel and their families.
