The Nigerian Army and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at promoting human rights, protecting civilians and enhancing national security through strict adherence to international humanitarian standards.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, stated this on Wednesday while receiving the Head of Delegation of the ICRC in Nigeria, Miss Doris El Doueihy, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief described the ICRC as a trusted strategic partner whose longstanding collaboration with the Nigerian Army has strengthened humanitarian action, operational professionalism and stability in conflict-affected areas.
Shaibu said the Nigerian Army remains committed to promoting human rights, strengthening civil-military relations and ensuring strict compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL), noting that protecting civilians and respecting humanitarian principles are essential to effective military operations and public confidence.
He disclosed that the Army has integrated International Humanitarian Law, human rights principles and standard rules of engagement into its training programmes at all levels.
The COAS added that the Army would continue implementing its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Plan, improving detention management, facilitating humanitarian access and adopting global best practices to enhance operational effectiveness while safeguarding civilian lives.
Earlier, the ICRC Head of Delegation, Miss Doris El Doueihy, commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism, transparency and sustained cooperation, which she said had improved the delivery of humanitarian assistance and the protection of vulnerable communities.
She also acknowledged the Army’s progress in detention management and its commitment to upholding internationally accepted humanitarian standards.
