The Nigerian Army has denied allegations circulating on social media that its personnel were involved in electoral activities during an incident at Ukwu Oji Umubele, Awka Ward 5, Awka South LGA of Anambra State, on November 8, 2025.

According to a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel OLABISI AYENI, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 82 Division, the incident occurred when troops from the 302 Artillery Regiment responded to a distress call from NYSC officials and INEC staff who reported being held hostage by suspected political thugs following the disappearance of a Collation Officer.

The Army clarified that a team of two officers and twelve soldiers was deployed to the scene, where they encountered a tense situation involving several political figures, including the Deputy Governor of Anambra State. Despite provocations, the troops reportedly acted with professionalism, rescuing the corps members and INEC officials before escorting them safely to the INEC office for continued collation.

The statement described the viral video suggesting Army interference in the polls as “misleading and lacking full context,” emphasizing that the intervention was a humanitarian and security response to protect lives and the integrity of the electoral process.

Headquarters 82 Division also noted the conduct of some political actors during the operation and pledged to engage with the Anambra State Government to ensure better cooperation in future exercises. The Army reaffirmed its neutrality, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding democracy, urging the public to disregard false narratives.
