The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), stressing the importance of credible and timely information in supporting national security efforts and countering misinformation.
The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele,revealed this while receiving the President of DECAN, Mr Odita Sunday, and members of the association’s executive committee during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement issued by Colonel Anele, the Army said effective strategic communication remains critical to building public trust and fostering the collective resolve needed to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
According to the statement, Anele noted that while troops continue to make significant sacrifices in defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the spread of false and misleading narratives often undermines their efforts.
She said success in tackling insecurity goes beyond military operations, adding that it also depends on dominating the information space through accurate, responsible and patriotic reporting.
The Army spokesperson commended DECAN for its professionalism and continued support in providing balanced and credible reports on military operations.
She also assured the association of the Directorate of Army Public Relations’ commitment to strengthening media engagement through regular capacity-building programmes, closer collaboration and expanded participation in its annual media workshop to improve the quality of national security reporting.
Speaking during the visit, DECAN President, Mr Odita Sunday, said the engagement was aimed at consolidating the longstanding partnership between the association and the Nigerian Army in promoting factual reporting, countering misinformation and improving public understanding of the Armed Forces’ constitutional responsibilities.
Both the Nigerian Army and DECAN reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining a strong military-media partnership, noting that addressing the country’s security challenges requires collaboration among security agencies, the media and the public to promote national unity, resilience and confidence.
