The Nigerian Navy has appointed Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho as its new Director of Naval Information and official spokesperson. In a press statement issued by Rear Admiral AO Olodude, Chief of Policy and Plans, the Navy said Captain Folorunsho takes over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been redeployed to head Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, one of the service’s key operational bases.
Captain Folorunsho, 46, was commissioned in 2003 and holds multiple advanced degrees in engineering, defence studies, maritime security and strategic studies from institutions in Nigeria, Pakistan, Sweden and the United States. He is also a fellow of both the Naval War College Nigeria and the US Naval War College.
His career spans sea, field and staff appointments, including service on several naval ships as a marine engineer, command roles in internal security operations, and a tour as a Military Liaison Officer with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. He has taught at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College and contributed to Nigeria’s indigenous shipbuilding efforts at the Naval Dockyard in Lagos.
Until his new appointment, he served as Assistant Director Plans at Naval Headquarters. The Navy said he brings extensive experience in research, operations, training and public communication, having worked on editorial projects and compered military events at local and international levels.
Captain Folorunsho is a recipient of several honours, including two Chief of Naval Staff awards for academic excellence and a UN commendation. He is married with two children.
The appointment was approved by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
