The Nigerian Immigration Service has declared that it is illegal to leave Nigeria without a valid passport, visa and other required travel documents, warning that irregular migration exposes citizens to human trafficking, forced labour and other forms of exploitation.
In a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, on May 25, 2026, the Service alerted the public to the growing cases of fraudulent migration schemes and irregular cross-border activities being carried out by individuals and organised criminal networks across the country.
The NIS said the criminal groups often target vulnerable persons, particularly young women and girls, with deceptive promises of employment, education and better opportunities abroad, noting that many victims end up exploited.

According to the statement, no genuine travelprocess bypasses official immigration procedures or authorised border posts, warning Nigerians to be cautious of unsolicited sponsorships, travel fares or offers of assistance from unknown or unverified persons.
The Service advised members of the public to verify the authenticity of all travel and recruitment opportunities through appropriate government channels and avoid dealing with agents promoting irregular migration.
It also urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities and individuals linked to such schemes to the nearest Nigeria Immigration Service formation or other relevant security agencies.
The NIS further appealed to parents, guardians and community leaders to educate young people on the dangers of irregular migration and trafficking in persons, while reaffirming its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting citizens from exploitation.
