Odita Elected DECAN President, Pledges Stronger Stakeholder Engagement

Members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) have elected a new executive committee to lead the association for the next two years, with Sunday Odita emerging as president.

The election, which was conducted peacefully, also produced Linus Aleke as vice president, Musa Umar Bologi as secretary and Benjamin Samson as treasurer.

Other elected officials are Martha Ebere (assistant secretary), Kikelomo Okere (financial secretary), Ihotu Odoh (welfare officer), Agbor Jame (provost) and Mathew Abi (public relations officer).

The newly elected executives pledged to prioritise members’ welfare and strengthen collaboration with stakeholders in the defence and security sector.

Speaking after the election, Odita said the new leadership would focus on improving the welfare of members and promoting professional excellence within the association.

He also pledged to deepen engagement with stakeholders across the defence, security and intelligence community to foster partnerships that support national security, peace and development.

According to him, stronger collaboration between the media and security institutions is essential for promoting accurate reporting, enhancing public trust and encouraging informed discourse on security issues.

Odita commended Nigerian troops for their sacrifices and contributions to efforts aimed at addressing security challenges across the country.

He also lauded the leadership of the Armed Forces and security agencies for their roles in sustaining peace and stability.

The new DECAN president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote national security, peace and development while strengthening its role as a bridge between the military, security institutions and the public.

The election was conducted through what members described as a transparent and hitch-free process.
