Operation Whirl Stroke Issues Safety Advisory to Waterway Users Amid Rising Water Levels

The Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke has issued a safety advisory to mariners, boat operators and riverine communities, warning of increased risks associated with rising water levels during the rainy season.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the advisory was issued on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara.

The Maritime Component Commander, Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari, said the ongoing rains have led to a significant increase in water levels across inland waterways within the Joint Operations Area, resulting in stronger currents and turbulence that could endanger water transportation and other riverine activities.

He warned that the prevailing conditions could increase the likelihood of boat accidents, leading to loss of lives and property if safety measures are not strictly observed.

To reduce risks, the operation directed all passengers and mariners to wear life jackets at all times while onboard boats and instructed boat operators to ensure that life buoys and other emergency equipment are available on their vessels.

The command also prohibited overloading of boats and reiterated that night sailing remains banned, restricting water transportation activities to between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons.

Boat operators were further directed to register with their respective unions and carry valid identification while operating on the waterways.

Residents of riverine communities were urged to promptly report suspicious movements and criminal activities to security agencies.

Zakari warned that violators of the safety directives would be sanctioned in line with existing regulations and called on maritime unions to ensure strict compliance among their members.

He reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Whirl Stroke to safeguarding lives, protecting property and maintaining security across waterways within its area of responsibility.
