The Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke has issued a safety advisory to mariners, boat operators and riverine communities, warning of increased risks on inland waterways due to rising water levels caused by the ongoing rainy season.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the advisory was issued on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara.

The Maritime Component Commander, Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari, said the increase in water volume across waterways within the Joint Operations Area has resulted in stronger currents and turbulence, heightening the risk of boat accidents and other water-related incidents.

He warned that failure to observe safety measures could lead to loss of lives and property and urged all waterway users to comply with established regulations.

The command directed passengers and mariners to wear life jackets at all times while on board boats, while operators and owners were instructed to ensure that life buoys and other emergency equipment are available on their vessels.

Boat operators were also warned against overloading and advised to carry essential safety items, including torchlights, spare spark plugs and tarpaulins.

The maritime component reiterated the prohibition of night sailing, stating that marine transportation activities are restricted to between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons.

It further directed all boat operators to register with their respective unions and carry valid means of identification while operating on the waterways.

Residents of riverine communities were urged to promptly report suspicious activities and criminal movements to security agencies.

Zakari warned that violators of the directives would face sanctions in accordance with existing regulations and called on maritime unions to ensure strict compliance among their members.

He reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Whirl Stroke to safeguarding lives and property and maintaining security across waterways within its operational area.
