The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, following a plenary session held on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

At a special sitting presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader of the House, Major Jack, read a notice of allegations of gross misconduct against the governor on the floor of the Assembly.

According to lawmakers, a total of 26 members signed the impeachment notice, which alleges that Governor Fubara violated Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

During the plenary session, the Assembly laid out a series of alleged offences, including the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending without legislative approval, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and failure to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for the legislature.

Following the presentation of the allegations against the governor, Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart read a separate impeachment notice against Deputy Governor Odu, accusing her of reckless spending of public funds, obstruction of the Assembly’s constitutional duties, and allowing unauthorised individuals to occupy government offices without legislative screening.

Speaker Amaewhule announced that the impeachment notice will be served on Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu within the next seven days, in line with legislative procedure.

The impeachment move comes amid renewed political tensions in Rivers State, including a public fallout between Governor Fubara and his former political godfather, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Wike has recently accused Fubara of breaching a peace agreement brokered earlier to resolve the state’s prolonged crisis.

Fubara, who previously defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2025, has not yet responded officially to the impeachment move. Political observers say the development could deepen divisions in the oil-rich state if the process continues to unfold.
