Senate Committee Pledges Support for NDLEA’s Anti-Drug Campaign

The Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics has pledged its support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country.

The assurance was given during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Senator Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea, to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, retired, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit, Senator Ikpea said the committee was committed to partnering with the NDLEA through legislative support, public awareness campaigns and rehabilitation initiatives aimed at addressing drug abuse, particularly among young people.

The senator, who represents Edo Central Senatorial District, also commended Marwa’s leadership and pledged the committee’s backing to strengthen the agency’s efforts against drug-related crimes.

Responding, Marwa thanked the senator for the visit and reaffirmed the agency’s readiness to work closely with the committee.

He described drug abuse and trafficking as major social challenges and highlighted the agency’s achievements in dismantling transnational drug cartels, arresting suspected drug barons and recovering assets linked to illicit drug activities.

The NDLEA chairman attributed the agency’s successes to the support of President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly and the judiciary, adding that the agency would continue to intensify efforts to reduce both the supply and demand for illicit drugs across the country.

The visit comes as the NDLEA continues its nationwide campaign against drug abuse and trafficking through enforcement, rehabilitation and public sensitisation programmes.
