The Nigerian Army has responded to allegations made by a dismissed soldier, Ex-Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly known as “Soja Boi,” describing his claims on welfare, remuneration and equipment provision as false and misleading. The Army said the interview, which has circulated widely on social and mainstream media, was sensationalised and capable of misinforming the public.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, Olamilekan was not dismissed for expressing opinions or “speaking the truth,” but for repeated acts of indiscipline, including violations of the Armed Forces Social Media Policy. The statement said his dismissal followed due process in line with the Armed Forces Act and military regulations.

The Army maintained that its remuneration structure is clearly defined and transparent, with salaries determined by rank and years of serviceas outlined in the Manual of Financial Administration for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. It added that personnel receive additional entitlements such as uniform allowances and other periodic payments made directly into their accounts.

It further explained that troops deployed on operations or assigned duties outside their units are entitled to allowances, including ration cash and other operational benefits. Personnel serving in operational theatres, such as Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, also receive mission-specific allowances aimed at supporting their welfare and effectiveness. The Army said claims that soldiers receive no benefits beyond their salaries are inaccurate.

On the provision of uniforms and protective equipment, the Army described as false claimsthat soldiers are required to purchase items such as uniforms, bulletproof vests and helmets. It stated that the supply of kits, arms and operational gear is handled through established logistics systems, with ordnance units responsible for procurement and distribution. While some personnel may choose to acquire additional items for personal comfort, it said this is voluntary and not indicative of any systemic failure.

The Army stressed that no soldier is deployed for operations without the necessary protective equipment, dismissing suggestions that such gear is only issued during ceremonial visits as deliberate misinformation. It added that operational postings and deployments are based strictly on strategic requirements.

The Nigerian Army urged the public to disregard the allegations, describing them as baseless and intended to generate undue sympathy. It also called for continued public support for the ArmedForces and advised citizens and media organisations to verify information from credible official sources before dissemination.

The statement reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to discipline, accountability, national security and the welfare of its personnel.
