In a surprising development, Nigeria’s political space, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned from his position as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective immediately.
Ganduje, a former two-term governor of Kano State, announced his resignation on Thursday, citing health concerns as the primary reason for stepping down.
While the APC has yet to release an official statement, several party sources have hinted at underlying tensions that may have accelerated Ganduje’s decision.
In recent weeks, Ganduje faced mounting criticism from within the APC, particularly over allegations of financial impropriety. Aspiring candidates for the FCT area council elections had reportedly protested what they described as “hefty and unexplained financial demands” imposed by his office as part of the ticketing process.
The situation reportedly led to a growing rift among key stakeholders, with calls for transparency and internal reform.
Ganduje assumed the role of APC National Chairman in August 2023, amid already heightened internal party conflicts. His tenure, though relatively short, was marked by power tussles, financial controversies, and the challenge of unifying a party still grappling with post-election divisions.
Prior to his national appointment, Ganduje served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023, a period also shadowed by bribery allegations, though he consistently denied wrongdoing.
