Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his personal office on Sunday.
The announcement revealed that Biden, 82, sought medical evaluation last week after experiencing worsening urinary symptoms. A subsequent examination identified a prostate nodule, which led to a diagnosis of prostate cancer characterized by a high Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating an advanced and aggressive form of the disease.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement added, offering a measure of reassurance regarding the potential for treatment.
Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team. He is spending the weekend at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, according to a source familiar with the matter. Reporters have reached out to confirm where he is receiving medical care.
This development comes just days after a spokesperson disclosed that Biden had recently undergone evaluation for a small nodule found on his prostate. The revelation has reignited discussions about the former president’s health, a topic that was frequently in the spotlight during his time in office due to his age. Those concerns were magnified following his faltering debate performance against former President Donald Trump in June 2024.
In his last public medical report from February 2024, Biden was declared “fit for duty” by his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, with no new health concerns noted at the time.
Since leaving office, Biden has kept a relatively low profile, though he has gradually begun to reengage with public life in recent months. His office has not yet provided a timeline for further updates on his condition or treatment plan.
