Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters says it has put robust measures in place to prevent attacks and ensure public safety during the Christmas festivities. The Armed Forces of Nigeria, working with other security agencies, have intensified operations in areas considered vulnerable, with additional troops deployed to key locations and major routes nationwide.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Micheal Onoja, the military said special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to guarantee rapid response, while surveillance efforts — including aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering — have been significantly enhanced.
The Defence Headquarters said commanders across the country have been directed to strengthen patrols, establish fortified checkpoints and deepen collaboration with community leaders, local vigilante groups and state security outfits to disrupt criminal activity.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the military said national security remains its top priority and assured Nigerians of a peaceful festive period marked by unity and joy.
The Defence Headquarters also urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant, calling on the public to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest security formation. It said all credible reports would be treated with urgency and confidentiality, stressing that public cooperation is critical to the success of ongoing operations.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Oluyede conveyed Christmas and New Year goodwill to Nigerians, assuring them of the military’s continued resolve to safeguard the nation.
